Transect One: Backyard Ecology
Watercolor and Pencil, 2014
I wondered what I could see in one sitting in my yard. The experience proved to be a rich one, as I learned of a colorful creature new to me - the beautiful red banded leafhopper. I painted him or her twice, as I noticed it seemed to be a emitting a light from its back end, as I continued to sit. I thought perhaps it was signaling with light to a potential mate. After doing some research, I learned it was in fact releasing excess water. I suppose we refer to that as "number one" for people. Other animals I saw were slugs, a caterpillar, a spider, little flies, a bald faced hornet and what appeared to be white spittlebugs, who bullied the leafhoppers off the flower.
