The main focus of my paintings and drawings has been trees, especially those trees which have unique forms and features. My work is connected by a vision of taking the viewer from their cultivated environment to natural, less tamed spaces. Compositions are densely packed and richly layered to reflect the varying textures of a wooded space. While the images may be seen by some as simply observed documentation, the trees are also considered symbols for relationships and life's experiences.
In addition, my work has included studying the creatures that inhabit the landscape, especially the common and less appreciated. It has become more apparent to me what a key role each life has in this planet, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant. Each was created with a purpose and has a reason for being here. By making art of these companions, I hope to elevate their status; that they are worthy of our respect and admiration. All my animal imagery is created from life (and sometimes death) to get a sense of their spirit.
